Are you curious about Temporary and Contract work? Marike takes care of Temporary and Contract Recruitment at Leapfrog and answers some of the most frequently asked questions below.
1. What is the difference between a Temporary and a Contract job?
Temporary: Leapfrog will be your official employer, even though you will not be working in our offices. You will sign a contract with us, we will pay your wages and take care of Social Insurance and Tax deductions.
Contract: You will be employed by the hiring company, sign a contract directly with them and you will be on their payroll; much like a permanent job.
2. Why do companies employ Temps and Contractors?
Temps are called in to cover Permanent employees’ absence (planned or unplanned), to assist with a seasonal increase of work, or to see through a specific project.
3. How long are Temporary and Contract assignments?
It all depends on the company’s need. Temporary cover can be as short as one day up to several years (!), while Contract jobs tend to be for 3 months or longer. Some of our Temps have been with the same company for years, and some Temps and Contractors have been offered Permanent roles before even completing their assignment.
4. How and when do you get paid for Temporary and Contract work?
Our Temporary employees are paid weekly by electronic bank transfer. Contractors usually receive monthly wages, but this is dependent on the hiring company.
5. Do Temps and Contractors get benefits like holiday, sick pay or bonuses?
This depends on the job and the company, but Temp and Contract jobs usually do not include benefits. Some of our Temps, however, receive bonuses because of their excellent work, and it is not unheard of for some long term Contracts to include leave days.
6. Do Temps and Contractors earn more or less than Permanent employees?
Not necessarily either! Rate of pay is entirely job dependent. Depending on the level, requirements and length of the job, there might be some negotiation on salary, but companies usually have a set budget to stick to.
7. What is the notice period for a Temp or Contract job?
Our Temps have a one week notice period, and Contractors’ notice period is usually one month.
8. Which industries employ Temps and Contractors?
All of them! Temporary and Contract work is not bound to any specific industry, although some roles occur more often than others. One is always likely to find Administrative work on a temporary basis, however cover for maternity leave, secondments and sabbaticals enable us to offer varied and interesting Temp opportunities.
9. Do Temp jobs look good or bad on my CV?
It’s a common misconception that Temporary work looks bad on a CV. We have candidates on our books who are career Temps, purely because it suits their personal circumstances. At Leapfrog, we will represent you to our best abilities and we’re always happy to offer honest advice with your CV.
10. Do Temporary and Contract positions require interviews?
For short term Temporary jobs, our clients rely on our high quality Temps to step in and provide cover without an interview, but generally our Temps and Contractors attend interviews.
